Calendar templates
Overview: DateBk5 is a highly compatible, full-featured calendar program for Palm OS handheld devices. Added calendar views, icon capability, advanced color management, and quick entry template lists are a few of the many enhancements provided by this application. Anyone whose daily life is filled with personal and professional obligations will appreciate this well-designed organizational tool.
Background: Physicians are busy people. Days are filled with professional obligations ranging from patient care activities to administrative commitments. Who, what, where, and when are truly the operative words. And let's not forget about life outside of work. Personal appointments and family activities also require attention if the day is to progress smoothly Most of us have developed systems--wall or desk calendars, pocket organizers, diligent secretaries--to deal with these scheduling challenges. Handheld computers offer advantages such as ease of entry, updating capability, reminders, and portability, thus opening the door to effective calendar management.
Most handheld computers are factory equipped with address books, to-do lists, memo pads, and calendar/scheduling applications. Although these included programs are useful, third-party software applications have dramatically increased their basic capabilities. A handheld computer equipped with such a program can serve as an indispensable tool in the daily struggle to organize calendar/schedule details.
Description: DateBk5 has advanced the calendar capabilities of handheld computers to a new level. C.E. Steuart Dewar of Pimlico Software Inc. originally developed the program m the mid-1990s. It has been updated on a regular basis over the years, most recently with the release of DateBk5 in May 2002. It is available for the Palm OS platform only, will run from memory cards, and may be purchased and downloaded from the company Web site www.pimlicosoftware.com) or from www.handango.com.
DateBk5 utilizes the same built-in date book, address book, and to-do list: databases included with any Palm OS device. Seamless integration with these Palm OS personal information tools ensures a high level of compatibility with Palm desktop and conduit software. Handspring has even adopted a "light" version of DateBk3 (predecessor of DateBk5) as its default "DateBook+" program. Although DateBk5 includes all the capabilities of the Palm date book program, hundreds of useful features have been added.
General appearance, function, and navigation of the default day view screen are similar to that for date book; however, important differences are immediately apparent. Along the lower screen margin, tap links to several additional calendar views are provided. These include day view, two different week views (graphic and text-based), a monthly view, and a 4-month or yearly view.
The day view screen may be split to include addresses or to-do items. The "T" tap link accesses a list of quick entry templates (previously memorized calendar events or to-do's, selected and entered with only a tap).
The "L" tap link allows the user to associate relevant contact information from the address book with calendar events. Even the details button (abbreviated "Det") has more options. In particular, calendar events may be scheduled to the minute, assigned a standard. or user-defined icon, and categorized.
Pimlico's Web-based support deserves special mention. The company Web site is well organized and provides information on product line, system requirements, frequently asked questions, and installation and upgrading instructions.
Program utilities, add-ons, and a detailed 100-page manual are available for download. Support staff responses to e-mailed inquiries are prompt.
Final Notes: DateBk5 is a well-designed, highly compatible, robust calendar program that adds hundreds of useful functions to the basic capabilities of Palm's standard date book application. Quick entry template lists facilitate event entry Added views, icons, and advanced color management strengthen the at-a-glance calendar usefulness of a handheld so equipped. A well-organized, supportive company Web site rounds out the package.
When it comes to calendar management, take things into your own hands and give DateBk5 a try!
