JACK AND THE BEANSTALK
Get started: Grab an orange shirt, green pants, hiking shoes, burlap fabric, and two pairs of green tights. For tunic: Using a shirt with sleeves folded in as a template, cut two pieces of burlap. Stitch together and fray edges. Iron-on letters spell Jack's name. For beanstalk: Cut the legs off green tights; cut the foot off each leg. Stuff legs with batting and stitch ends together to form a stalk long enough to wrap around child. For branches: Stitch the four feet into triangles; stuff with batting. Poke small holes in stalk; push branches into holes and stitch into place. For vines and beans: Curl green chenille stems around a thick marker. Poke end of each stem into the stalk; push up and through fabric (as you would with a safety pin), twisting to secure. Cut bean shapes from green crafts foam and glue along the stalk. Wrap the stalk around the child and pin in place. For treat bag: Stitch two burlap rectangles together, with the top left open and frayed. Cut slits along the top and weave brown ribbon for a drawstring. Glue on fake gold coins. Spray-paint plastic eggs gold as a final touch.
RAPUNZEL
Get started: Round up purple and lavender tulle, a purple sweatshirt or leotard, and a spool of fuzzy yarn. For skirt: Layer tulle and cinch the top with a needle and thread; trim the skirt's hem according to your child's height. For wig: Cut strips of yarn twice as long as you want the wig to be. Center the yarn on a tight-fitting stocking cap; stitch down the middle to form a part. Cut bangs and braid sections of yarn; tie with ribbon. For cap: Cut a wedge shape from crafts foam end hot-glue edges together to form a cone. Stuff the end of a piece of tulle through a small hole at the top of the cone. Glue beaded trim around the top and bottom of cap. Attach chin ribbons to each side. For treat bag: Cut bricks, balcony, and roof from gray crafts foam and glue to a gray gift bag to resemble a tower. Glue purple foam shingles and flag to the roof.
PINOCCHIO
Get started: Grab wood-grain-pattern adhesive paper, navy shorts, a blue button-down shirt, inexpensive sunglasses, and a plastic test tube (found at crafts stores) For glasses: Pop lenses out; hot-glue test tube to nose bridge. Cover with adhesive paper. Cover a sheet of crafts foam with adhesive paper; cut tiny branch shapes. Cut leaves tram green crafts foam and glue to branches; glue branches to glasses. For cap, belt, shirt pocket, and treat bag: Cover all with adhesive paper; also cover details on bowling-style shoes. For donkey ears: Cut ears from extra-plush gray felt and pink felt. Stitch together and glue to sides of cap.
DOROTHY AND TOTO
Get started: You'll need a denim jumper, blue-and-white gingham, plastic zip-up boots, and a white blouse and tights. For apron: Use jumper as a template to cut apron top and skirt from gingham; make skirt portion wider than jumper skirt. Pleat top of skirt and secure with pins. Stitch to apron top. Stitch a fabric strip to each side for a sash that ties in back. Cut a gingham pocket; stitch to center of apron bib. Cut slits in bib to hook over jumper's top buttons. For boots: Tape off zipper, soles, and heels. Spray with red paint made for plastic; let dry. Coat with spray adhesive; sprinkle with red glitter. For basket: Line with gingham; add a toy Scottie dog for Toto.
LITTLE BO PEEP
Get started: Gather a corduroy skirt, prairie-style top, black Mary Janes, and old fashioned bonnet. For skirt: Cut small shapes from woolly fabric for sheep bodies and ears. Cut heads and legs from dark gray felt. From pink fleece, cut small pieces for inner ears and stitch to the larger ears. Stitch or hot-glue bodies, ears, and legs around hem of skirt, letting the legs hang down like fringe. Sew or glue a white button onto each sheep's head to look like an eye. For treat bag: Cut two large sheep bodies from woolly fabric and stitch together, leaving the top open. Add head, legs, mars, and eye. Cut two long strips of pink fleece for handles and stitch or glue to inside of bag. For staff: Spray-paint a cane pale brown and tie with a jaunty bow.
HUMPTY DUMPTY
Get started: Begin with a red shirt and pants, red visor, white crafts foam, and red and white foam posterboard. For mask: Cut an egg shape from foam (be sure it will wrap around the child's face--our mask is about 12x9 inches). Snip out eye and mouth holes. Cut nose, cheeks, and open mouth from foam; tint with blusher and hot-glue to mask. From decorative paper, cut a tiny shirt and shorts; glue to base of mask. Glue a white button to shirt. Cut foam arms and legs; glue to shirt and shorts. Stuff red baby socks with cotton batting. Slip socks over legs and glue. Fit baby shoes over socks. For brick wall: Cut two rectangles large enough to cover child's torso from white foam posterboard, Glue on bricks cut from red foam posterboard. Attach red ribbons to make shoulder straps, For visor: Cut letters that spell "Humpty" from foam (computer-printed letters are a good guide). Hot-glue to visor and pin visor over mask to hold it in place. For treat bag: Cover a white gift bag with red posterboard bricks.
