Adobe brought LiveMotion 1.0's easy-to-use object-oriented animation techniques to the world of Flash authoring. The new Adobe LiveMotion 2.0 adds robust scripting to the toolset, making LiveMotion the only program—aside from Macromedia Flash itself—capable of generating true Flash-based Internet applications.

In addition to the basic behaviors found in Version 1.0—such as rollover effects and navigation controls—LiveMotion 2.0 now offers an internal Script Editor to build true applications, complete with conditional logic and variables. Essential programming tools include a search-and-replace function, color-coded text, a JavaScript syntax reference, and the ability to set break points for the built-in debugger. Experienced coders will wish for more advanced conveniences like line numbering and auto-code completion.

The Script Editor can be used to write ActionScript (to control the movie at runtime) or Automation Script (to control LiveMotion's internal functions). For example, using Automation Script to animate multiple objects along a path would allow a developer to convert a multistep operation into a single-click command. When coupled with a custom interface (which Adobe has dubbed a Live Tab), Automation Scripts can accept different parameters each time the script is executed.

Keyboard shortcuts let you quickly navigate to a specific object property on the timeline, and a track can be locked or shy (hidden in the timeline but visible in the composition window). And lengthening or shortening an object's duration bar automatically redistributes the keyframes. Our only complaint is that we cannot enter keyframe values directly into the timeline.

LiveMotion can now export the Flash 5 format, MP3 streaming sound, and QuickTime movies. It also handles imported Photoshop and Illustrator layers more intelligently. Best of all, LiveMotion templates can be edited from within GoLive, Adobe's HMTL editor. This lets developers create a single master movie (like an animated button) and modify objects (like button labels) on the fly.

LiveMotion 2.0 will not displace Macromedia Flash as the preeminent Web animation authoring tool for high-end programmers. For example, though LiveMotion 2.0 does a better job of preserving vector data upon export, it still rasterizes a significant number of objects and effects. And the very things that make LiveMotion more accessible—namely, the time-based animation paradigm and the internal use of JavaScript—also serve to keep the program one step removed from absolute control of the resulting SWF movie. Still, Adobe LiveMotion 2.0 is a viable authoring alternative to Macromedia Flash.
