A very had people like us in mind when it created MacLabel Pro, an application that automates the making of all kinds of labels. Big labels and small labels, floppy-disk labels and address labels--MacLabel Pro eliminates the full long associated with printing labels from databases and word processors. Why? Because it comes with templates--specifications for more than 50 dot-matrix and laser-label printer formats. You can change specificatios to match other brands of labels, or you can start from scratch. For example, if your mailing labels already have your logo and return address printed on them, you can easily locate the addressee's information in the most attractive and practical place.
You can import data from a number o f sources, including such programs as File-Maker, Microsoft Word, or Excel, or any program that will output data with field delimiters such as tabs or commas.
Intuitive and flexible. I figure that A very had beginners in mind when they wrote the documentation; they started with the most basic step of all--"turn your computer on." The many diagrams included in the step-by-step manual were impressive and made me comfortable with the software almost immediately. The Quick Tour introduces the template window and menu bar, describes the terms used, and lists the different label designs and sizes.
Besides size manipulation, you can also change the type size, face, and style. When you want to get artsy, you'll find a basic selection of background patterns, puls backg-ground and text colors, and the ability to paste graphics in from the clipboard--or use the graphics that come with MacLabel Pro. I thought the shading in some of the graphics was too dark to discern the pictures, but most were fine. MacLabel Pro recognizes all Apple printers, as well as the Hewlett-Packard Desk Writer and DeskJet.
MacLabel Pro is both fun and functional. Thanks to the wonderfully explicit instructions and illustrations, and the flexibility in formating and importing, my dread of making labels has vanished. (EDITOR'S NOTE: For more information on making labels, see this month's Software Solutions.)
