Invitation templates
One reason Web surveys are so popular is that they are much easier to field than mail and phone surveys—but easier is a relative term. Web-survey software is crucial for constructing questionnaires and collecting results, and WebSurveyor 5 manages to be among the easiest to use without sacrificing advanced capability.
WebSurveyor 5 takes well-designed features from a previous, PC-based version and adds the convenience of a hosted solution. All you need is a Web browser to access the software and create surveys. The revamped user interface is significantly improved; the previous Web version was stodgy and slow, but WebSurveyor 5 operates as smoothly as a desktop app.
When you're ready to create a survey, WebSurveyor provides a complete selection of question types, including matrix-format queries with multiple rows and columns. For beginners, a helpful Survey Wizard provides access to survey templates and a question library to take any guesswork out of the process. Although WebSurveyor allows some leeway in survey design, graphically oriented programs such as Quask's FormArtist offer more visual flexibility. On the other hand, Quask doesn't have a hosted solution.
Either way, we think the more text-based and somewhat formal approach to creating questions in WebSurveyor provides a solid framework for understanding important options. This is particularly true for advanced features, such as data piping, question skipping, and conditional branching. WebSurveyor has an excellent, wizard-like procedure for developing logic to help subjects move between survey pages.
You can also validate responses (that is, require that certain answers be text or numeric, specify a maximum or minimum number of responses, require that answers add up to a certain amount, and so on), but Raosoft's EZSurvey Pro has more depth in that area, with a custom validation window for adding open-ended calculations and conditions. To be fair, however, EZSurvey Pro is more expensive and targeted at large-scale enterprises.
Deploying a survey (publishing to a host server) is a one-click affair. Every WebSurveyor account has a dashboard portal, so you can view the survey's status quickly. It's also the jumping-off point to create or edit surveys and access Invitation Management, which merges contact lists with e-mail messages that invite people to take a survey.
Survey results are collected at the host server and are available for real-time analysis. WebSurveyor makes good use of graphs for displaying results, and its reporting capabilities include cluster reports, which can show subreports based on how a question was answered. Data is exportable, but only in comma- or tab-separated text files.
WebSurveyor 5 balances the science of creating effective Web surveys with the art of making them easy to produce. It stands out for being pleasurable to use as well as simple to use.
